Managing the Top 10 Symptoms of Menopause Non-Medically
-HOLISTIC HEALTH Doctor HELPS WOMEN POWER THROUGH PHYSICAL, Psychological CHANGES AT WOMEN’S WELLNESS SEMINAR -
(Scranton, PA) – May 8, 2025 – Menopause will affect 1.1 billion women this year alone and can be a critical turning point for a woman’s health, both physically and mentally. This transition can be associated with a variety of irritating symptoms, such as night sweats, hot flashes and brain fog, as well as more severe ailments like insulin resistance, increased fat accumulation and cholesterol levels which can lead to cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Doctor of Natural Medicine Peter Amato, founder of the U.S.-based functional health practice Inner Harmony Wellness Centers, focuses on managing a woman’s symptoms and supporting overall well-being through a variety of non-medical methods, including lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and complementary therapies, and will share his 30+ years of expertise on the topic at a public Women’s Wellness Retreat on June 12-15, 2025 at the Harmony Mountain Institute in Scranton, PA.
“For too long, women have been embarrassed to talk about a natural process that may be significantly impacting their personal and professional lives,” said Dr. Peter Amato, founder of Inner Harmony Wellness Centers. “Unfortunately, menopause is a moving target of symptoms – when one is relieved, another one manifests. My functional medicine practice takes a total-body approach by testing the health of each cell and alleviating symptoms at the root level.”
Dr. Amato notes that his center’s unique protocol examines deep-seeded toxicity in a woman’s body. These toxins, such as fungal infections, mold, heavy metals or parasites, wreak havoc on the nervous and endocrine system and get in the way of the body's ability to function optimally, including the ability to balance hormones. Once revealed, Dr. Amato’s first step is to conduct a gentle cellular detoxification to remove the barriers. Next, he tests women for the need of hormones, neurotransmitter support, vitamins, minerals, and nutrition and creates a personalized wellness plan.
“Since menopause varies in length of years for each woman, we encourage testing once a month for six consecutive months,” adds Dr. Amato. “This allows us to adapt to their bodies' changing symptoms and needs and helps women feel more empowered and intuitive about what’s working for their bodies and what’s not.”
Dr. Amato discusses the top ten symptoms experienced by women in menopause and natural ways to eliminate each one:
· Hot Flashes/Night Sweats- taking black cohosh, dong qui, red clover and St. John’s Wort supplements, as well as eating more soy products, like tofu, flaxseeds and edamame that contain phytoestrogens can balance hormones and reduce this annoyance.
· Insomnia/Sleep Disturbances- taking melatonin or valerian root supplements before bedtime can help achieve consistent sleep. Hypnosis, acupuncture, cognitive behavioral therapy, yoga and mindfulness can also help manage stress and improve sleep.
· Weight Gain- Women should focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, quit smoking and limit caffeine and alcohol intake. Regular physical activity, like brisk walking, swimming or dancing boosts cardiovascular health. including strength training and balance exercises, which preserve muscle mass.
· Mood Swings- Evening primrose and St. John’s Wort supplements, with an increase in exercise can keep moods regulated.
· Thinning Hair- A diet rich in essential vitamins and minerals, like biotin, zinc, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein, can nourish hair follicles from within. Keratin, the primary protein in hair, requires a constant supply of protein to maintain healthy strands. Drinking plenty of water is crucial for hair health and can help maintain moisture and prevent breakage. Rosemary, peppermint, and other essential oils can be added to scalp massages to further stimulate growth and improve scalp health.
· Dull, Dry and Sagging Skin- Collagen, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamin D supplements help skin health, along with moisturizing with aloe vera, coconut oil, olive oil. Egg whites and yogurt naturally tighten skin. Eating bananas, which contain vitamins and natural oils, can help improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Drinking plenty of water is also crucial for skin health.
· Fatigue –Eat regular meals and healthy snacks every 3 to 4 hours, rather than a large meal less often; lose weight to gain energy.
· Vaginal Dryness- Topical vitamin E oil applied to the vagina helps improve lubrication and may also reduce hot flashes.
· Low Sex Drive- Addressing stress, improving sleep, and engaging in regular physical activity can positively impact sex drive. Eating a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and circulation-boosting foods, like citrus fruits and peppers can also be beneficial. Certain foods are believed to have libido-boosting properties like chocolate, oysters, garlic, and fenugreek. Some individuals may find relief with supplements like L-arginine, DHEA, ginseng, Ginko biloba, and maca.
· Brain Fog- taking vitamin C, ashwagandha, Ginko biloba, lion’s mane, magnesium and B vitamins or drinking ginseng tea can clear away confusion.
“Although menopause is often considered a reproductive issue by most medical practitioners, this extensive list of debilitating symptoms proves that the effects of menopause can ripple throughout the entire body,” said Dr. Amato. “We look forward to teaching all women how to balance the two key hormones of estrogen and progesterone that regulate and support many other bodily systems at our upcoming Women’s Wellness Retreat.”
