A Holistic Approach to Weight Loss

Holistic Approach

Now that summer is in full swing and the heat is intense, we strive to look and feel our best.  As we all know, being at an ideal weight has its challenges.  Anyone who has been on a weight loss journey knows that it not only affects us physically but can influence ALL of you, emotionally and mentally.  Some of us experience weight gain not only by our eating patterns, but by the way we feel emotionally.  When we take all of these factors into consideration, and focus not only on the physical, we may reach our goals more effectively.

Holistic weight loss considers all factors that can influence weight gain and looks at your emotional, mental, and physical health.  Often excess weight is a symptom of an underlying condition.  By taking a holistic approach, our mental, emotional, and social factors, can have a big impact on the physical factors.

When talking about weight loss, we know that in order to successfully drop pounds, we have to be aware of the foods we are putting in our bodies and we have to incorporate some type of physical movement into our days.  These lifestyle changes need to be realistic and sustainable to stick with them.  A holistic approach goes beyond what you eat and how you move and focuses on a deep mind-body relationship.  For example, exercise works to reduce stress but are we stressed because we are overweight or are we overweight because we stressed?  Either way, exercise is a healthy way to improve our mind and body.  Regular exercise can be effective in reducing stress and anxiety, two known factors that contribute to weight gain.  When we are less anxious and stressed, we are better able to establish a healthy eating plan.  Everything is intertwined.

Below are some techniques that can improve the mind body connection and can help us on our weight loss journey:

  • Hold yourself Accountable; track everything, including your behavior patterns.
  • Set realistic goals; we can’t control the number on the scale, but we can control the behaviors that cause it to go up or down
  • Identify thoughts and triggers that contribute to emotional eating
  • Include daily mind/body exercise to chill out and relax such as meditation and yoga
  • Consult with a Dr. of Natural Medicine to design a holistic plan that is specific to you
