The term fatigue is defined as an overall feeling of tiredness or lack of energy. We all experience the normal feeling of being “sleepy” but chronic fatigue is much more. Being tired, or “sleepy”, is a state of mind while exhaustion is a trait. When the two are combined, an endless loop of fatigue occurs.  Fatigue takes a toll on your body and mind.  Motivation is at an all-time low and doing the things you once loved to do don’t seem as appealing. You can experience physical symptoms and become mentally exhausted. Chronic fatigue can become debilitating and consume our world and in today’s world, fatigue is being reported at an all-time high.  But what causes this overwhelming condition? Are there ways we can prevent it or even rid the symptoms if already diagnosed? Chronic Fatigue and COVID

As we all know, extreme fatigue is a common symptom of COVID-19, but as COVID seemed to subside, did individuals who have been dealing with exhaustion experience relief?  Some who have survived the virus suffer from low energy for months on end.  It has been reported that six out of 10 survivors of COVID-19 who’d been hospitalized experience muscle fatigue and weakness six months later.  Even those who are vaccinated report feelings of extreme exhaustion.

Even those who were not diagnose with COVID, may be feeling symptoms of exhaustion due to various changes in their lifestyles. Having to adapt to a whole new way of working, parenting, schooling, and just interacting in general can be super exhausting. Our sleeping patterns are off.  Our eating patterns are off.  We are just over it.  We want to know what is going to happen next, but at the same time, we keep doing the same thing over and over.  That alone is exhausting.   •  Adequate Sleep – There is no question that our sleep patterns have defiantly been altered by pandemic lifestyle.  We are staying up later, eating late at night, and spending late night chat session on our phones.  A consistent bedtime routine is imperative for a good night’s rest.
  • Lessen Anxiety – Laying awake in bed at night with thoughts racing through your brain can prevent us from getting the rest we need.  Simple breathing techniques and meditation can help alleviate anxious feelings and allow us to relax.
  • Healthy Diet – consuming a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is essential to fuel our bodies
  • Move – Physical activity and movement are key components in building energy.  Get outside and get some fresh Air!
