~ Solutions for health, stress or your spiritual journey ~
Yoga is related to the word yoke, which comes from the Sanskrit word "Yuj' meaning to control, unite or join and also relates to "contemplation."
The origin of Yoga goes back thousands of years and spans many different cultures and spiritual traditions including the teachings of Jesus, but it is not a religion – yoga is the union of body, mind and spirit; the union of your individuality with the divine intelligence that orchestrates the universe.
Yoga is also a state of being in which the elements and forces that comprise your biological organism are in harmonious interaction with the elements of the cosmos. Through practice, you will experience enhanced health benefits as well as a more refined emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being.
With continued practice of yoga, one will experience a spontaneous blossoming of intuition, insight, imagination, creativity, meaning and a renewed vision of one's life purpose. In addition to stress reduction and incredible health benefits such as lower blood pressure and weight loss, students learn to become more flexible in mind and body.
You will learn to make different choices that will benefit not only you, but also everyone affected by you, in your life.
When, in the book of Matthew, Jesus says, "My yoke is easy, and my burden is light;" he is expressing the core principle of yoga. His intelligence is aligned with cosmic intelligence, his will with the divine will. Yoga is a wonderful path to expand your awareness of the relationship between your individuality and your world. Our planet is in need of healing and transformation.
At times, the challenges of our age can seem overwhelming and beyond the influence of our individual intention. I believe that understanding yoga helps to provide an opportunity to contribute to a better world through the very personal choices we make on a daily basis. Through the practice and understanding of yoga, you can enhance the union between your body and mind, and develop balance and flexibility in the midst of challenge.
Some of the popular types of yoga are Hatha, Raja and Bhakti.
Hatha Yoga - the foundational discipline on which nearly all other styles are based. In Sanskrit, HA means sun and THA means moon. Hence, the practice is designed to bring the yin and the yang, light and dark, masculine and feminine aspects and polarities into balance. These are the physical positions.
Raja Yoga - the Royal Path to Union. Raja yoga is the meditative aspect of relaxing the mind and moving beyond the addiction to thoughts and emotions. Raja yoga is moving toward an inward focus with our concentration. Liberation from our thinking provides a waking up to our true nature, our essential state. This is our spirit or self.
Bhakti Yoga – the yoga of love and devotion. Bhakti is love of God, but also the expression and blossoming of love in all your relationships. Bhakti yoga is the path to the opening of the heart centre and communing with our internal divine nature or kingdom within.
